West Ham United have completed the signing of Nikola Vlasic from CSKA Moscow.
The Athletic understands the club have paid €30 million (£25.7 million), plus €9 million (£7.7 million) in add-ons for the playmaker, who has signed a five-year contract with the option for an additional year.
Vlasic, 23, moved to CSKA Moscow on a permanent deal in 2019 after a year in the Premier League playing for Everton.
The Croatia international made 19 appearances in all competitions for Everton during the 2017-18 season, scoring two goals, which both came in the group stages of the Europa League.
In Vlasic's three-year spell in Russia, he made over 250 appearances, scored 33 goals and amassed 21 assists. He was named Russian Premier League Footballer of the Year in 2020.
The attacking midfielder is West Ham's third signing of the summer following the arrivals of Alphonse Areola and Kurt Zouma.
West Ham manager David Moyes said: “I have been watching Nikola improve over recent seasons – he has got a good goals and assists record during that time. He is also a Croatia international with experience and still being only 23, I feel there is more to come from him.
“I was really impressed with how determined Nikola was to become a West Ham player. It’s that hunger and ambition that fits with what we are trying to build here at the Club.”
Why have West Ham signed him?
With Jesse Lingard's return to the London Stadium appearing unlikely, Moyes needed to bolster his attacking options.
In Vlasic, Moyes has a player who can ease the goalscoring on Michail Antonio, Pablo Fornals and Tomas Soucek and the West Ham manager has stated on numerous occasions he only wants to sign players who will improve his squad.
The club's recent recruitment has markedly improved and the hope is that Vlasic will go on to impress like Said Benrahma, Jarrod Bowen and Vladimir Coufal have done.
What kind of player is he?
Vlasic profiles as a classic No 10, something he made clear after his exit from Everton, having mainly been deployed in a wide role.
He links play well in the final third and likes to carry to the ball, but is not renowned for his defensive contributions.
Although a midfielder who enjoys passing through the lines, Vlasic also has a keen eye for goal and registered 11 goals in 26 Russian Premier League matches last season. He is also not afraid to try his luck from distance.
Will West Ham sign anyone else?
In the build-up to the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, Moyes said he was "desperate" to sign a forward and is keen to find cover for Antonio.
Alex Kral has been linked with a loan move and would augment Moyes' defensive options. As it stands the midfielders at his disposal are Declan Rice, Mark Noble, Soucek, Manuel Lanzini and Conor Coventry — who could join a Championship side on loan.
The reason why Lingard returning appears unlikely is because the England international wants to fight for his place at Old Trafford.
Moyes remains interested in bringing the 28-year-old back to the club and there could yet be another twist on deadline day.

No, he really DID play less than 100 games for CSKA (80+ if you include subs etc). It's all over most stats on him.
He did not play 250 hames for CSKA by any measurement. Unless you count each game a few times!

Fortunes - he didn't. It's a mistake by the mag: they've added up all of his performances over his career, for some reason.
He played 63 games for CSKA and scored 23 goals, which is a good return for an attacking midfielder.

Sounds like a useful player, he can rotate when we’re playing 2 games a week and we need more options on the bench to change the game.
